The face-to-face seminar at Nan Hua High School will be modified to an online seminar to be held in the afternoon. You will have the opportunity to interact and engage with Kim McMonagle, Director of Educational Technology from Douglas County School District. We will record her presentations and upload them to YouTube for your viewing by 12.30 pm. Some of us may need to clear with the heads of my institutions before sharing with others educators. There has to be a more intelligent way to, create resources by building other people work if permission is already given before you ask, share your resources and make known what others can do with it. This spotlight will make references to open source physics works and this presentation is derived based on Professor Ashley TAN's power-point here. sharing with thai friends

i can say that i am impressed that leader (hwee peng) in etd allowed me to share about open source physics during official duties to thai friends!
the idea i get is we all want to help the thai friends but some stuff in 'password protected places' may not be up to us to share freely.
This lead me to share about creative commons licenses that should be implemented into any 21st century literate government including moe policy (look at what the USA government has done, truly inspiring http://whyopenedmatters.org/index.html ) for more logically sharing of digital content, regardless of the degree of freedom attached to the resources. ALL rights reserved is simply outdated, while public domain has too much freedom for a government policy.

recently, boon chien, yes, he is the president teacher award winner, he ask me to debug why his computer running windows 8 cannot run all the old java applets such as

thanks to boon chien's tip, the tutorial is created in short time.

by the way, the Easy Java Simulations are not affected by this security setting blocking feature.

i decide to write a simple tutorial to help anyone debug and run old java applets.


step 0: notice your favorite java applet is blocked



step 1: go to the windows control panel, launch Java Control Panel, if panel is missing uninstall Java here, i recommend the offline version http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp Windows Offline
step 2: launch the Java Control Panel

step 3: select Security tab, move slider to lowest setting, click button Apply and button OK. this may work already, but if it doesn't go to Advanced tab

step 4:  at the Advanced tab, unchecked Java Plug-in Enable the next generation Java Plug-in (requires browser restart) . Agree to Disable.

step 5: a success message appears

step 6: restart browser (very important!) . Agree to Run.
Done! should be working already. Enjoy!

step 7: enjoy!

to further verify, i tried the local downloaded versions

Interference and Diffraction
With this simulation, you can explore the ideas of interference and diffraction resulting from waves passing through a single opening (the single slit); waves being emitted with equal amplitude in all directions from two sources (the double source), and waves passing through two closely spaced openings (the double slit). Note that the double-slit pattern is a combination of the single-slit and double-source patterns.

For the single slit that has a slit width a, the locations of the zeroes in the pattern (from destructive interference) are given by:
single-slit pattern, destructive interference: a sinθ = m λ, where m = 1, 2, 3, ...

For the double source, with a distance d between the sources, the locations of the zeroes in the pattern (from destructive interference) and interference maxima (from constructive interference) are given by:

double-source pattern, constructive interference: d sinθ = m λ, where m = 0, 1, 2, ...

The double-slit pattern has the same equations as the double source,

the commonly remembered formula could be sinθ = tanθ
therefore m λ / d = y / D
a check using m = 1, red = 0.64 x 10 ^-6 m, d = 4.1 x 10^-6 m, D =1.000 m, and indeed 0.156 = 0.156



with the exception of what are known as missing orders. This is when bright regions of constructive interference that are predicted by the last equation above are not observed, because they coincide with zeroes in the pattern associated with the single slit equation. When d/a = 4, for instance, bright lines corresponding to m = 4, 8, 12, ... (multiples of d/a) are missing from the pattern, because neither slit sends out waves in those directions.

Activities

  1. Different colors are associated with different wavelengths, which is why the patterns change when you change to a light source of a different color. Rank the colors red, green, and blue in terms of their wavelengths, from largest to smallest.
  2. With the single-slit pattern, what happens to the pattern when the width of the slit is increased? What happens to the pattern when the wavelength of the waves incident on the slit is increased?
  3. With the double-source or double-slit patterns, what happens to the pattern when the distance between the sources or slits is increased? What happens to the pattern when the wavelength is increased?
  4. For any of the patterns, what happens to the pattern observed on the screen when the distance to the screen is increased? Why?
  5. With the double-slit pattern, do you observe any missing orders? If the ratio of d/a (slit separation to slit width) is 4, for instance, do you observe missing orders for all bright lines corresponding to m = 4, 8, 12, etc.?

Abstract : We develop an Easy Java Simulation (EJS) model for students to visualize Newton’s 1st and 3rd laws, using frictionless constant motion equation and a spring collision equation during impact. Using Physics by Inquiry instructional (PbI) strategy, the simulation and its problem based inquiry worksheet aims to enhance learning of these two Newtonian concepts. We report results from Experimental (N=62 students) and Control (N=67) Groups in 11 multiple-choice questions pre- and post-tests, conducted by three teachers in the school. Results suggest, at 95% confidence level, significant improvement for concept of Newton’s 1st Law while not so for Newton’s 3rd Law. A Focus Group Discussion revealed students confirming the usefulness of the EJS model in visualizing the 1st Law while not so much for the 3rd Law. We speculate the design ideas for constant velocity motion in the computer model coupled with the PbI worksheet did allow for ‘making sense’ and experiencing of the 1st Law, where traditional pen-paper representations could not. We have improved the features for the action-reaction contact forces visualization associated with the 3rd Law and we hope other teachers will find the simulation useful for their classes and further customize them to benefit all mankind, becoming citizens for the world.

Abstract :

In the study of Newtonian theoretical gravity concepts, the collection of scientific data is key to enactment of essential features of inquiry (Eick, Meadows, & Balkcom, 2005). Word problem solving 'pedagogy' (Ng & Lee, 2009) is not only a pedagogical mismatch (L. C. McDermott, 1993), sending students on field trips into outer-space is also untenable from safety and economic standpoints. Thus, researchers have created simulations (Lindsey, 2012; PhET, 2011) to allow multiple visualization (Gilbert, 2010; Wong, Sng, Ng, & Wee, 2011) of these difficult concepts but they are usually meant for their own specific context.

Therefore, our research and development is on customized computer models (Wee & Mak, 2009) using the Easy Java Simulation authoring toolkit (Christian & Esquembre, 2012; Christian, Esquembre, & Barbato, 2011; Esquembre, 2010a; F. These new computer models serves to support the enactment of scientific work that are inquiry-centric and evidence-based that are more likely to promote enjoyment and inspire imagination having ‘experienced’ gravity-physics than traditional pen paper problem solving.

Pilot research suggests students’ enactment of investigative learning like scientist is now possible, where gravity-physics ‘comes alive’. We are still improving the features of these computer models through more students and teacher feedback and are downloadable from  http://weelookang.blogspot.sg/2012/01/gravity-physics-by-inquiry-2012-innergy.html.We hope more teachers will find the simulations useful in their own classes and further customized them so that others will find them more intelligible  (Juuti & Lavonen, 2006) and contribute back to the wider educational fraternity to benefit all humankind.
