    I have no issues exploring the simulations. I'm now working with another colleague on the mass-spring system. So far we can only meet once a week to discuss. I'll update the progress soon.
    I'm currently trying out Moodle and the EJSApps plugin for Moodle. I thought I could allow students to upload their sims onto the forum I have created for them but it seems that I cannot set their permissions properly for them to just able to upload the sims using EJSApps. Do you have any experiences setting up such a system?

    Have tried experimenting this last year . Did not continue on as the collaborative features are not working.
    As for uploading to the forum, perhaps, you can try to see if the permissions in the directory are set to write for all users.
    This is the thread posting that I posted last year. The issues looks similar.

    Case Study 1: Teacher-initiated Java Simulation design for Teaching and Learning




    This innovation was first conceptualized by an MOE edulab officer working with physics teachers from secondary schools and junior college schools to address challenges in the learning of Physics (MOE, 2012). They worked together to design resources that could enhance students’ understanding of abstract concepts in physics by customizing and localizing open source computer simulations and models for the local curriculum (MOE, 2012). These models focused on using inquiry pedagogy with multiple representations of experiments allowing for hands-on and minds-on approach. This innovation not allows for self-directed (students deciding on a phenomena to investigate on) and collaborative (tasks are difficult requires working together to share and come up with better ideas) learning but also allows teachers to change classroom conditions to cater for students with varying abilities (eduLab, 2010). This teacher initiative therefore shows greater ownership of scaling up practices and higher fidelity towards improving the learning and teaching experiece. This innovation has spread to five junior colleges (RVHS, YJC, AJC, IJC and SRJC) and unofficially to another four (ACJC, MJC, NJC, NYJC) in 2013.



    It is pertinent to note that the process of socializing the innovation and garnering feedback has taken place right from its onset (eduLab, 2010). Teachers in partner schools are not passive beneficiaries of the innovation; rather they are actively engaged in every stage of the process. They are, for instance, involved in co-developing the simulations or java applets, worksheets or Google sites for enactment of the inquiry pedagogy by students. Locally, workshops and sharing sessions with other schools through school cluster network and other channels (eduLab@AST, ExCel Fest, Physics Chapter, IPSG Physics etc) were well received. International, teachers shared at conferences (World Conference on Physics Education, and American Association of Physics Teacher Meetings and Multimedia in Physics Teaching and Learning) and the MOE edulab officer has a blog http://weelookang.blogspot.sg/ with 40,000 visitors monthly encouraging fellow educators from all around the world to try the programme and give feedback on how it could be further improved (Wee & Lee, 2011). As eduLab and MOE see growing interests among teachers, schools, and students, it has provided additional support in the form of time and space for nurturing specialist’s skills, research and expertise, funding for teacher professional development and action research activities (eduLab, 2010).

    In the study of Newtonian theoretical gravity concepts, the collection of scientific data is key to enactment of essential features of inquiry (Eick, Meadows, & Balkcom, 2005). Word problem solving 'pedagogy' (Ng & Lee, 2009) is not only a pedagogical mismatch (L. C. McDermott, 1993), sending students on field trips into outer-space is also untenable from safety and economic standpoints. Thus, researchers have created simulations (Lindsey, 2012; PhET, 2011) to allow multiple visualization (Gilbert, 2010; Wong, Sng, Ng, & Wee, 2011) of these difficult concepts but they are usually meant for their own specific context.
    Therefore, our research and development is on customized computer models (Wee & Mak, 2009) using the Easy Java Simulation authoring toolkit (Christian & Esquembre, 2012; Christian, Esquembre, & Barbato, 2011; Esquembre, 2010a; F. K. Hwang & Esquembre, 2003) that are not only tailored to the Singapore syllabus but will be free, based on astronomical data, supported with literature reviewed researched pedagogical features. These new computer models serves to support the enactment of scientific work that are inquiry-centric and evidence-based that are more likely to promote enjoyment and inspire imagination having ‘experienced’ gravity-physics than tradtional pen paper problem solving.
    Our MOE useable research question lies in the pedagogical design ideas-principles of computer models (Wee, 2012; Wee, Chew, Goh, Tan, & Lee, 2012).

    Addressing Difficulties in Learning Newton’s 1st and 3rd Laws Through PbI and ICT

    This presentation discusses the effective use of Java simulation and the Physics by Inquiry (PbI) method to enhance students’ learning of scientific concepts. The presenters will share how the Java simulation and PbI worksheet were administered to classes to address students’ misconceptions about Newton’s 1st and 3rd Laws. The presenters will also discuss the use of focus group discussions to gather feedback from students on the effectiveness of the intervention.

    By engaging in a hands-on activity, participants will get to experience what the students went through in the classroom to correct their misconceptions about Newton’s 1st and 3rd Laws. The presenters will also share insights gained from the planning of this lesson and how the use of Java simulation, as well as the PbI worksheet, has enhanced their understanding of student learning.

    Java Simulation Design for Teaching and Learning NRF2011- eduLab 001
    Teachers from River Valley High School, Yishun Junior College, Innova Junior College, Anderson Junior College, Serangoon Junior College and Educational Technology Division will showcase their customised computer models lesson packages. These lesson packages are designed to enable students to conduct scientific investigation-inquiry on collision carts, gravity physics, ripple tank, falling magnet through solenoid and waves computer models.
    These 5 computer model lessons have enabled students to become like scientists - experience and collect data as evidence to support their scientific thinking. This has made lessons meaningful and fun, and more importantly inspired curiosity and imagination among the students.
    All computer models (including the Innergy GOLD award 2012 gravity-physics by inquiry) and their lesson packages will be given away for free to participants as part of the innovative spreading of meaningful use of technology in education under the MOE-eduLab programme.
